From birth, children learn about communication. They learn communication skills by looking through a picture book, by learning the names of toys, asking mom for more juice, or by negotiating with a sibling about sharing a favored toy. Learning communication skills is a major part of childhood development.
At DES, we strive to develop student leaders with effective communication skills. To help reach this goal, the 5th grade participates in the 4-H Speak Up Alabama Project. Every year, our 5th graders write and deliver a speech that is judged by 4-H leaders. Winners of the 5th grade speech project move on to county competition. We have even had winners go on to compete at the state level!
Students will be given a Speech Project Packet on Monday. Students will begin working on their speeches during class. This speech project is their ONLY homework from me. The Project Packet includes detailed steps on writing the speech and important dates.
Please encourage your student to do their very best!
