I love the Harcourt School Publishers’ StoryTown curriculum! I have enjoyed using it in my 3rd grade class during student teaching. It is full of  opportunities to expand upon the base curriculum. It is linked to core standards and provides ample opportunities to integrate Language Arts with other areas such as Social Studies and Science.

My cooperating teacher implemented using PowerPoint presentations with each lesson of this curriculum some time ago. The PowerPoints are excellent tools. They stimulate the visual learner and hold the attention of those who tend to be less attentive. I wanted to design a way to insure that my students were following along with the lesson at all times. I also wanted to hold the students accountable for answering QODs (Questions of the Day) that lead into each day’s lesson.

To accomplish this, I designed a Learning Log for Lesson 8 of the 3rd grade curriculum. It proved to be a success the very first day. The Learning Log accompanies five days of lessons. I will use it for an assessment totalling 100 points at the end of the lesson. It worked so well that I plan on designing similar Learning Logs for other lessons.

I have attached a copy of the Lesson 8 Learning Log (I hope it works!). I will post others as they are designed.

Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation.
